The case for and against

Updated Oct 21, 2026

Bull case

Alcon is well positioned because its pure-play leadership in ophthalmic devices combines durable franchises in contact lenses, ocular health, and surgical equipment with a broad installed base that should keep supporting recurring demand and upgrade cycles. Recent results showed ~7% xFx growth, core EPS of $0.84, and strong margin outperformance, while FY26 guidance implies $10.927B to $11.134B in sales and core operating margins of 20.7% to 21.7%, underscoring meaningful operating leverage. The outlook is further reinforced by new products like Tryptyp, Precision7, Unity, PanOptix Pro, and Vivity, which are driving share gains and should sustain mid-single digit revenue growth with double-digit EPS expansion despite softer end markets.

Bear case

Alcon is facing a negative outlook because weaker-than-expected uptake of new products and intensifying competition are limiting growth below the 6% to 8% range, while margin expansion is expected to stall in the low-20s as costs run ahead of expectations. FY26 guidance still points to net sales growth of 5% to 7% xFx and core operating margins of 20.5% to 21.5%, but a ~$100M to $150M tariff headwind, including $33M in 1Q26 expenses, will pressure COGS and blunt profitability. Even with share buybacks and some gross-margin support from a $60M tariff refund contribution in 3Q, the company’s heavy investment, competition, and rollout risks suggest shares are likely to remain range-bound.
