The case for and against

Updated Oct 14, 2026

Bull case

Best Buy Co is supported by improving fundamentals across its core categories, with the first positive comp in Consumer Electronics since 4Q21 and an appliance inflection after four straight down years, while these two categories alone represent roughly 39% of annual revenue. It also benefits from margin lift through the “3M’s” of media, membership, and marketplace, plus $41M in tariff refunds in September and $35M in 2Q, which can support EPS even as some gains are reinvested. The outlook is further strengthened by product-cycle tailwinds in TVs, gaming, phones, and AI-related offerings, alongside strong vendor partnerships, national retail exclusives, and a large domestic store base that reinforces scale and customer reach.

Bear case

Best Buy Co is facing a fragile operating backdrop because tariffs could raise supply-chain costs, compress retail margins, and even reduce unit volumes if prices rise to offset those pressures. Its sales outlook is also tied to an above average employment rate, so any deterioration in labor trends could quickly pressure demand across its domestic-led business and its roughly 1,068-store footprint. Competitive ecommerce growth adds further strain by increasing price transparency and shifting share away from stores, while appliance sales—about 11% of sales—remain only partly improved and still appear more company-specific than structurally strong.
