The case for and against

Updated Oct 15, 2026

Bull case

Canaan is positioned favorably because it combines leading-edge ASIC design with a vertically integrated model that spans mining machine sales and self-mining, giving it multiple ways to benefit from rising Bitcoin adoption. Its A16 series efficiency of about 13 J/TH, continued progress on the Avalon Home series, and expanding optionality in power sourcing support stronger product differentiation and future growth in both institutional and consumer channels. Fundamentally, management’s disciplined capital allocation—$13.9M of treasury monetization, roughly 16M ADSs repurchased for about $7M year to date, and cash improving to about $66M from $44M in 1Q26—shows balance-sheet resilience and shareholder-friendly execution even in a weaker market.

Bear case

Canaan is under pressure from collapsing hardware demand, with 2Q revenue of $31.9M down 49% Q/Q and product sales falling ~70% sequentially as lower BTC prices and softer ASIC demand hit both mining equipment and self-mining economics. Its 2Q adjusted EBITDA was $(31.4M) before $25.3M of inventory write-downs and other fair-value losses, while revised FY2026 and FY2027 EBITDA estimates of -$170M and -$133M underscore persistent unprofitability. Although Project ABC and low-cost power provide some support, the business remains highly exposed to Bitcoin volatility, rising competition, regulatory risk, and potential technology obsolescence.
