The case for and against

Updated Oct 14, 2026

Bull case

The Campbell's is well positioned by its diversified portfolio, with meals and beverages at 61% of revenue and snacks at 39%, while iconic and scaled brands like Pepperidge Farm, Goldfish, Rao’s, and V8 support resilient demand. Organic sales in meals and beverages rose 3%, helped by 12% broth consumption growth and 10% Rao’s growth, reinforcing its advantage in affordable, convenient at-home cooking as consumers favor semi-scratch meal solutions that now exceed half of M&B retail sales. The company also has a credible margin recovery path through its $500M FY'30 savings program, including more than $100M of expected FY'27 savings, plant closures, and a ~13% salaried headcount reduction, which should strengthen profitability despite a competitive packaged food landscape.

Bear case

The Campbell's is viewed negatively because its core Snacks business continues to underperform, with organic sales down 6% in F4Q and management not expecting consumption to turn positive during FY27, while tougher competition and weak salty-snack trends keep pressuring volume and margins. Initial FY27 guidance also signals a 2-4% organic sales decline, a 50-100 bps gross margin drop, and a 17-24% decrease in adjusted EPS as 5-6% commodity inflation and double-digit logistics inflation outpace pricing gains. Although Meals & Beverages has held up better and Rao’s is a bright spot, those strengths have not offset broad execution issues, rising cost pressure, and reduced investor confidence after the dividend cut.
