The case for and against

Updated Oct 16, 2026

Bull case

FB Financial is supported by a well-positioned community bank franchise in attractive growth markets, with Nashville representing slightly over a third of the footprint and Tennessee population growth outpacing the U.S., which should aid longer-term loan and deposit expansion. Core fundamentals remain solid, as deposits reached $14.1 billion at 1Q26, the cost of interest-bearing funds fell to 2.79%, the NIM was 3.94%, and management expects mid-to-high single-digit balance sheet growth with NII and fee income still growing. Even after a tougher PPNR quarter, the company’s disciplined pricing, improving core deposit mix, 1.4%+ ROA profile, and well-managed capital base around 11.5% CET1 support the view that profitability and shareholder returns can improve further.

Bear case

FB Financial is facing a negative setup because earnings estimates were cut for FY26/27E to $4.64/$4.90 as net interest margin pressure and softer mortgage-related fees limit profitability, while PPNR fell about $4M sequentially even as loan and deposit growth improved. The core concern is that a few more basis points of NIM compression could keep FY27E EPS growth minimal, and loan growth remains the key watchpoint because sub-mid-single-digit expansion would undermine the growth thesis. Although credit quality remains manageable with low NCOs and an ACL near 1.47%-1.49%, the stock also carries execution risk from acquisitions, rate uncertainty, and the possibility that the franchise becomes less differentiated as a larger regional bank.
