The case for and against

Updated Oct 17, 2026

Bull case

Lemonade is viewed positively because its AI-first insurance platform is already producing clear operating leverage: over the past three years premiums doubled while the LAE ratio fell from 13% to 6%, ~80% of claims are now handled without human involvement, and headcount has declined -6% since 4Q22 even as the business scaled. The company is also demonstrating strong growth and underwriting improvement, with 1Q26 revenue of $258.0M, adjusted gross profit of $101M, in-force premium of $1.333B, and a TTM gross loss ratio of 61% that improved 12 percentage points YoY, alongside 10 straight quarters of accelerating IFP growth. Its outlook is further supported by expanding growth vectors in Lemonade Car, Lemonade Pet surpassing $500M in IFP, and Europe’s 103% quarterly IFP growth across four countries, all of which reinforce the path toward EBITDA profitability in 4Q26 and beyond.

Bear case

Lemonade is still showing underwriting progress, but the investment case remains challenged by only gradual progress toward adjusted EBITDA profitability, now targeted for 4Q26, and by dependence on initiatives that are still early such as cross-sell expansion and autonomous optimization in 2026. While net customer adds and a 7% increase in premiums per customer outside home support momentum, the home business continues to decline, the autonomous car product remains limited to a few states, and elevated gross loss ratios in home and Europe raise concern about underwriting quality. The negative view is further reinforced by higher stock-based compensation tied to a multiyear grant, investor disappointment with the less impressive loss-ratio improvement, and ongoing risks from regulation, reinsurance, customer acquisition costs, and AI competition.
