The case for and against

Updated Oct 21, 2026

Bull case

Sun Life Financial is positioned favorably by its diversified earnings engine, with Canada, the U.S., Asia, and asset management all contributing meaningful profit streams that helped drive Q2/26 underlying EPS of $2.02 above expectations. The company’s core businesses showed resilience, led by stronger-than-forecast Canada insurance experience gains, solid U.S. group and health results, and improving organic capital generation of $454 million in the quarter with a 145% holdco LICAT ratio. While MFS outflows remain a headwind, Sun Life Asset Management’s net inflows and the $19.7 billion mandate win at its ~30% stake in ABSLAMC support a constructive growth outlook, alongside disciplined capital returns through buybacks and a higher dividend.

Bear case

Sun Life Financial is facing a weaker fundamental backdrop because capital strength is slipping below expectations, with the holdco LICAT ratio at 145% versus a 148% estimate and operating-company LICAT down to 133%, while holdco cash fell to $1.3 billion and organic capital generation was only $148 million. Earnings quality is also mixed: U.S. Group Benefits margins have been above the 7% target since 2024 but have been declining, U.S. Dental earnings softened, and MFS produced US$16.3 billion of net outflows alongside lower asset-management earnings. Although Asia and U.S. results helped offset some weakness, ongoing exposure to low rates, equity volatility, rising expenses, and acquisition-related financing costs supports a cautious outlook.
