The case for and against

Updated Sep 18, 2026

Bull case

Tamboran Resources is well-positioned in the Australian and Asia-Pacific region to support the Net Zero CO2 energy transition with its focus on low CO2 unconventional gas resources in the Beetaloo sub-basin. The company has a strong start to its exploration and appraisal activities and has potential for further growth as it awaits the farm-out deal in 2Q26. However, there are risks to this positive outlook such as a delay in LNG facility construction, weaker pricing, and environmental and political risks that could impact the company's financials and operations.

Bear case

Tamboran Resources is facing several obstacles that may hinder its success, including a higher cost structure than its peers, limited familiarity with new technology, and the need for additional funding and strong stock performance. There are also risks associated with being an early-stage company operating in a nascent basin with no proven resources. Despite the potential for a strong market in Asia and the recent transactions in the Beetaloo Basin valuing it at a higher rate, there are still uncertainties and additional requirements for exploration and approval before commercialization. These challenges create a higher risk profile for investors, but also present a unique opportunity to get in early on a potentially valuable resource. However, there is a chance for a significant upside if the company is able to successfully navigate these challenges and fully realize the potential of its acreage in the Beetaloo Basin.
