The case for and against

Updated Oct 17, 2026

Bull case

Traws Pharma is supported by a clear asymmetric thesis, with tivoxavir marboxil and ratutrelvir positioned as potentially differentiated antivirals against influenza and COVID, respectively, while broader upside also comes from hantavirus or Ebola applications. The April PIPE financing added $10.0M upfront and up to $60.0M in total potential gross proceeds, which management expects to fund operations into 1Q27 and support completion of the planned TXM human influenza challenge trial, reducing a key cash overhang. Although 2Q26 showed a $0.16 per-share loss and no revenue, the stronger signal is continued regulatory and clinical progress, since R&D declined to $1.1M and the company’s valuation hinges more on pipeline success than quarterly expense noise.

Bear case

Traws Pharma is viewed negatively because its near-term value driver has been impaired by the 6/12/2026 deferral of the Phase 2a influenza challenge study for tivoxavir marboxil after a negative MHRA review, leaving limited visibility on the company’s next catalyst. The COVID program, ratutrelvir, appears deemphasized while the broader COVID therapeutic market has shrunk materially, with Paxlovid sales falling to $186M in 1Q26 from $1.2B in 3Q25, and the program is only assigned a 15% probability of success. Although the hantavirus/Ebola antiviral program adds optionality, it is still early-stage with no later-stage efficacy data, and the company’s valuation already reflects a 17.6% WACC, financing dilution risk, and uncertainty around partnering and revenue generation.
