The case for and against

Updated Oct 21, 2026

Bull case

Valley National Bancorp is viewed favorably because it has methodically strengthened its balance sheet through lower CRE exposure, higher capital, and higher reserves, while the model points to 16.7% ROTCE in 2028E versus 13.0% in 2026E, comfortably above management’s 15% guidepost for 2027E. The Bluevine and Providence acquisitions should further improve earnings quality by expanding low-cost deposits, deepening SMB and digital capabilities, and supporting about 20%+ EPS growth in 2026E, 2027E, and 2028E, with Bluevine alone expected to add $2.1 billion to $3 billion of low-cost deposits and ~8% 2028 EPS accretion. Trading at roughly 1.25x pro forma TBV/share, the stock appears attractive because disciplined execution, no near-term additional M&A, and continuing buybacks could unlock a re-rating as profitability and funding mix improve.

Bear case

Valley National Bancorp is viewed negatively because its growth outlook is vulnerable to a material slowdown in loan growth, less favorable deposit trends, pricing pressure, and negative credit migration, with ongoing efforts to reduce CRE concentration adding execution risk. Its primarily Commercial Banking-driven revenue base leaves results exposed to a challenging interest-rate backdrop, where a flatter or inverted yield curve could pressure margins and limit net interest income expansion. Macro weakness in its markets could also compress real estate values, lift default rates, and weaken asset quality and future growth prospects, while intensifying competition for loans and core deposits could further constrain performance.
