The case for and against

Updated Oct 14, 2026

Bull case

Walmart is well positioned because its unmatched scale, with over 10,700 stores, 270 million weekly customers, and more than $713 billion in fiscal 2026 sales, gives it a durable traffic engine that few rivals can replicate. Its core grocery-led U.S. business, plus a growing international footprint in Mexico and India, supports steady demand while private brands, remodels, and fashion pop-ups are increasing basket size and lifting underpenetrated categories. The outlook is further strengthened by a fast-monetizing digital flywheel, as eCommerce, advertising, membership, marketplace, and fulfillment services are growing faster than core retail and should drive operating leverage, margin expansion, and higher returns on capital.

Bear case

Walmart is exposed to tariff-driven cost inflation, and with less pricing flexibility in general merchandise, higher input costs could compress gross margins and force price increases that may weaken unit volumes. Its reliance on consumer traffic and employment conditions also creates risk, because any deterioration in the labor market could pressure sales across its $735.84 billion LTM revenue base. Although e-commerce, advertising, and membership are growing, those channels carry heavier fulfillment and competitive pressures, while return on capital slipped from 13.64% to 12.90% and economic profit fell 3.00%, suggesting improving scale has not yet fully translated into stronger efficiency.
