The case for and against

Updated Oct 14, 2026

Bull case

Fluence Energy is attractive because its energy storage and optimization software sit at the center of grid decarbonization, with deployed MW as of May 2021 eliminating 145,000 metric tons of carbon per year on an annualized basis, while its domestic sourcing strategy could benefit from IRA credits. The bull case also supports meaningful operating leverage, with revenues modeled to grow to $4.5bn, about $500mm above the base case, and margins assumed 1pp higher, aided by a gradual mix shift toward recurring services and digital revenue. While elevated rates, project delays, and intensifying competition may pressure near-term execution, the company’s innovation, distribution channel, and customer relationships support a favorable long-term outlook as backlog conversion and software attach improve.

Bear case

Fluence Energy is facing a worsening execution problem, with Houston manufacturing delays and supplier ramp issues forcing a $600 million FY2026 revenue cut to about $2.4 billion and reducing adjusted EBITDA guidance to a roughly $200 million loss from a much smaller loss previously. The recurring slip in deliveries, late-penalty costs of about $65 million, and another roughly $85 million of logistical disruption suggest the company is not yet able to convert its backlog efficiently, undermining confidence in its operational model. As management shifts to cash preservation, limits U.S.-produced orders, and relies more on manual welding, the business appears likely to lose share in its most profitable market while facing a longer, more uncertain recovery in margins and bookings.
