The case for and against

Updated Oct 16, 2026

Bull case

Agilent Technologies is well positioned by a broad-based operating mix that is showing strong organic momentum, with Q3 sales up 7.3% and the Life Sciences and Diagnostics Markets Group up about 10%, both ahead of expectations. The positive outlook is reinforced by durable exposure to sticky pharma, chemical, and advanced materials end markets, where pharma-related revenue grew 9% excluding CDMO, CAM rose 7%, and reshoring-related orders were booked ahead of plan. It also benefits from synchronized product cycles, including low-double-digit LC growth, >$60M funnel for the new ICP-MS, and 2x planned GC orders, while minimal academic/government drag and a geographically diversified base support resilience.

Bear case

Agilent Technologies is viewed negatively because its revenue mix leaves it exposed to cyclical industrial demand, with about 25% of sales from chemical and advanced materials and another ~10% from environmental/forensics, both areas vulnerable to macroeconomic deterioration. The company’s 18% China exposure, versus a peer average of ~12%, adds risk given mixed market conditions there, while margin expansion may fall short because tariffs, sales phasing, and weather can offset the operating leverage from IGNITE. Valuation downside also reflects skepticism that the growth rebound is durable, with an 18x P/E near the bottom of its five-year range and downside risk to EPS if EBIT expansion and core growth underperform.
