The case for and against

Updated Oct 21, 2026

Bull case

Abivax is viewed favorably because obefazimod addresses a large unmet need in ulcerative colitis, where no active, safe, easy-to-prescribe oral option has clearly succeeded and Phase 3 data show durable efficacy versus advanced therapies with simpler QD oral dosing. Its safety profile has also improved materially, with non-melanoma skin cancer rates remaining within expected UC background ranges and no clear drug-specific signal, removing an important overhang for adoption. Fundamentally, the opportunity is amplified by a growing IBD market, management’s 2025 to 2032 UC market growth outlook, and stronger-than-expected maintenance data that support a potentially best-in-class backbone for both 1L use and combination regimens.

Bear case

Abivax is burdened by a highly concentrated, single-asset profile in obefazimod, with valuation tied to uncertain Phase 3 outcomes in ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease and a DCF anchored to 2027E net income that remains highly speculative. The negative outlook reflects elevated clinical and regulatory risk, the possibility of safety signals halting development, and the need to raise capital under less favorable assumptions, which could dilute shareholders and pressure returns. Even where management disputes related adverse events, the company still faces commercial execution risk, competition from current and future therapies, and manufacturing or shipment challenges that could limit eventual sales.
