The case for and against

Updated Oct 14, 2026

Bull case

Allstate is benefiting from a successful turnaround in personal auto, where aggressive rate increases, tighter underwriting, and selective policy attrition restored margin and produced combined ratios well below historical norms, with an 88.5% underlying combined ratio year-to-date and reported EPS of $8.99 versus $6.03 consensus. Its outlook is further supported by accelerating policy growth, a strong homeowners opportunity as peers retreat or lack margin, and management’s confidence that it can trade modest margin for faster growth while still earning attractive returns. Capital strength also reinforces the case, with $1.3 billion returned to shareholders, $2.6 billion remaining under the $4 billion repurchase authorization, and deployable capital rising to $9.5 billion.

Bear case

Allstate is vulnerable to a thesis built on mounting competitive pressure, which can compress margins in its core personal auto and broader property-casualty business, especially when products are distributed through about 6,000 exclusive agents. Its earnings quality also faces risk from unexpected changes in claim cost inflation, which can quickly erode underwriting profitability if loss trends outpace pricing and reserves. In addition, asbestos exposure and financial market sensitivity in its life operations add litigation and investment risk, making the overall fundamental outlook less attractive.
