The case for and against

Updated Oct 14, 2026

Bull case

AMETEK is supported by a differentiated niche-market portfolio, with more than 40 autonomous businesses serving resilient end markets such as medical, aerospace and defense, power, automation, and manufacturing, which helps sustain pricing power and above-average growth. The latest quarter showed that strength is broadening, as 1Q26 sales rose 11% to $1.928B, adjusted EPS increased 13% to $1.97, organic orders jumped 22% to a record $2.2B, and backlog reached about $3.87B, equal to roughly 45% of FTM sales. Its outlook is further reinforced by a very strong balance sheet with net leverage of 0.7x, 107% FCF conversion in 1Q26, and an active M&A pipeline that supports continued capital compounding and earnings growth.

Bear case

AMETEK is vulnerable to a weaker outlook because its exposure to cyclical markets such as oil & gas, industrial, process, aerospace, and military can quickly translate a slower economic recovery or recession into softer revenue and operating income. Its roughly 19% revenue exposure to Europe and about 50% of sales outside the US add meaningful macro and currency risk, while tighter capex budgets, trade-related headwinds, and a stronger USD could pressure demand, pricing, and realization. The company’s reliance on acquisitions also creates integration and overpayment risk, and any slowdown in its highly profitable aerospace or industrial end markets could amplify margin pressure.
