The case for and against

Updated Oct 17, 2026

Bull case

Aurora Innovation is viewed positively because it has already proven real-world traction, logging about 440,000 to 500,000 driverless miles since commercialization in late April 2025 while operating 10 to 12 routes and targeting more than 200 driverless trucks by year-end and more than 1,000 by the end of 2027. Its investment case is strengthened by commercial partnerships and scalability, including Volvo’s roadmap for more than 300 autonomous trucks by the end of 2027, Hirschbach’s 500-truck order, and Aumovio’s high-volume hardware installation support, which should improve unit economics as the Driver as a Service model rolls out. Financially, Aurora reported about $1.2B to $1.3B of liquidity, expects FY26 revenue of $14M-$16M, a TaaS run-rate of about $80M, breakeven gross margin by year-end, and positive free cash flow in FY28, supporting the view that it can scale into a high-margin leader.

Bear case

Aurora Innovation is viewed negatively because its long-term upside, while potentially large at $5B+ in revenue on 30k+ trucks in 2030, still implies it will serve only about 4% of available miles by then, leaving the business far from broad industry penetration. Near-term fundamentals have weakened as 2028 FCF guidance was cut and equity capital needs doubled to $1.5B, suggesting heavier dilution and a more uncertain funding path even as operating leverage remains unproven. Investor confidence is also pressured by missed expectations for clearer partner commentary, with the bear case centered on setbacks delaying autonomous adoption and reducing the value of its call options in adjacent mobility markets.
