The case for and against

Updated Oct 14, 2026

Bull case

Brookfield Asset Mgmt is attractive because its scale, diversification, and asset-light model support durable compounding: fee-bearing capital reached $672B in 2Q26, LTM fee-related earnings were $3.2B, and LTM fundraising hit $163B, up 70% YoY. Management’s 2031 targets imply fee-bearing capital of $1.3T, fee-related earnings of $6.6B, and distributable earnings per share of $3.99, aided by margin expansion from 56.5% to about 61% and a larger contribution from carry-eligible capital. Its outlook is further strengthened by broad global exposure, a leading credit platform after the Oaktree acquisition, and secular tailwinds in AI infrastructure, private wealth, and defined contribution channels.

Bear case

Brookfield Asset Mgmt is vulnerable to a weaker fundraising and deployment backdrop that could slow fee growth and limit asset gathering across its USD 1.268 trillion platform, especially given its reliance on fee-earning AUM of USD 672.2 billion. A deterioration in investment performance would pressure portfolio marks, reduce carried interest, and force a markdown of unrealized carry by 50%, undermining earnings quality across its real estate, private equity, and alternative credit businesses. If FRE multiple compression to 19x persists, it would signal that investors are assigning a lower valuation to recurring fee earnings, reinforcing a negative fundamental outlook.
