The case for and against

Updated Oct 17, 2026

Bull case

BJ's Restaurants is well positioned because traffic has remained strong across the full-service dining category, with BJRI posting six to seven consecutive quarters of traffic growth and a 2.4% same-store sales increase in 1Q26 driven almost entirely by 2.2% traffic. Its menu and value initiatives, including the Pizookie Meal Deal, upgraded burgers and pizza, and beverage innovation, are resonating with younger guests and supporting higher incidence, repeat visits, and better brand relevance. Operationally, the company is showing leverage from improved staffing, predictive sales tools, and disciplined cost management, while two new unit openings in 4Q26 and a path to 4-6 units in FY27 suggest an inflection toward renewed growth.

Bear case

BJ's Restaurants is vulnerable to renewed dine-in restrictions and weaker consumer traffic, both of which could materially hurt sales, profitability, and the cash flow needed to support the business. Its outlook is further pressured by recessionary conditions, softer consumer confidence, higher gasoline or oil prices, rising interest rates, and unemployment, all of which can reduce spending at full-service restaurants. Margin risk is also elevated because labor shortages may force higher wages or shorter operating hours, while geographic concentration in California, Texas, and Florida leaves the company exposed to region-specific weather, disaster, and economic disruptions.
