The case for and against

Updated Oct 18, 2026

Bull case

Brookfield is supported by a diversified, fee-generating platform, with Asset Management contributing the majority of revenue and private equity delivering the highest revenue within its segments, while the U.S. remains the top geographic contributor. Its outlook is strengthened by visible growth levers: a 17% CAGR in distributable earnings from the base business from 2026-2031, potential 24% DE/share CAGR including carried interest and capital allocation, and $54 billion of free cash flow over the next five years to fund reinvestment and buybacks. Real estate recovery, $188 billion of total dry powder/liquidity, and Brookfield Wealth Solutions’ target to scale assets to $375 billion by 2031 with $5.8 billion of DE further support long-term NAV expansion and compounding.

Bear case

Brookfield is viewed negatively because its near-term earnings visibility has weakened even as management kept the $25B realized carried interest outlook over N10Y, with the $5B expected in the next 1-3 years now 17% below the prior $6B view and 60% of that amount tied to funds where capital has already been returned. Q1/26 reinforced the slowdown, with realized carried interest at $157M versus $188M forecast, DE/share at $0.66, and real estate DE of $120M versus $160M expected, while BPG NOI fell 20% q/q and 9% y/y. The firm also faces structural risks from its complex organization, dependence on asset classes like private credit and insurance, and climate exposure across real assets, which together support a more conservative fundamental outlook.
