The case for and against

Updated Oct 17, 2026

Bull case

Bank of New York Mellon is attractive fundamentally because its transformation into a more integrated enterprise has translated into durable organic growth, stronger client penetration, and sustained positive operating leverage, with 2Q26 revenue of $5.7 billion up 13% year over year and pre-tax margin expanding to 39.8%. The firm’s scale in global custody and servicing, with $62.6 trillion in AUC/A and $2.2 trillion in AUM, provides a capital-light, fee-rich earnings base that benefited from broad-based growth across Securities Services, Market and Wealth Services, and Investment and Wealth Management. Continued NII expansion to $1.4 billion, disciplined expenses, and high capital returns reinforce improving profitability, while ROACE of 17.2% and ROATCE of 31.1% signal a best-in-class earnings profile.

Bear case

Bank of New York Mellon is exposed to macroeconomic dislocation, Middle East hostilities, and policy uncertainty that could weaken asset values and hurt asset servicing and wealth management activity. Its earnings are also vulnerable to credit losses, interest-rate swings, and tighter regulation, while the flat 11.0% CET1 ratio and 6.3% SLR show limited cushion versus prior periods. A downturn in fixed income markets or operating leverage, combined with already richer relative valuation, could further pressure profitability and sentiment.
