The case for and against

Updated Oct 18, 2026

Bull case

Citigroup is benefiting from a cleaner, more focused franchise that is now translating its global scale into stronger earnings power, highlighted by 3Q26 revenue of $23.8 billion, up 8% year over year, and EPS of $2.85, up 53%. Its Services engine remains the standout, with revenue up 15% to $6.6 billion, ROTCE of 31.2%, average deposits of $1.04 trillion, and AUC/AUA up 16% to $35.0 trillion, while Banking, Wealth, and U.S. Cards also contributed to growth. Fundamentally, the firm is demonstrating improving operating leverage and capital discipline, with efficiency improving to 58.5%, ROTCE above 11%, tangible book value per share up 6.1%, and $4.1 billion returned to common shareholders.

Bear case

Citigroup is facing a fundamentally fragile earnings mix, with net interest income slipping sequentially to $16.98 billion and net interest margin compressing to 2.43% as lower Markets NII and higher funding costs offset gains elsewhere. Credit costs also remain elevated, as provision for credit losses rose to $2.59 billion and the CET1 ratio stayed at 12.8% but fell 50 basis points year-over-year, reflecting buybacks, dividends, and unrealized losses on available-for-sale securities. Although year-over-year growth in Markets and Services shows operating leverage, the heavy dependence on cyclical capital markets, rising reserve builds, and macro risks tied to higher inflation and policy uncertainty support a negative outlook.
