The case for and against

Updated Oct 21, 2026

Bull case

Crown Holdings is benefiting from a strong beat-and-raise quarter, with adjusted operating EPS of $2.49 versus the high end of guidance at $2.10-$2.20 and 2026 full-year EPS guidance lifted to $8.30-$8.50. The outlook is supported by broad-based volume growth across North America, Europe, and Asia Pacific, with Europe up 7% year over year and continued substrate conversion to cans, while solid price/cost management, declining capex after major expansion projects, and strong free cash flow should strengthen earnings durability. In addition, about $200 million of expected share repurchases in 2H and a manageable net debt/EBITDA target of 2.5x reinforce capital returns and balance-sheet discipline.

Bear case

Crown Holdings is burdened by a risk profile that outweighs its operating catalysts, as further FX headwinds, high exposure to Europe, South America, and Southeast Asia, and the possibility of weaker demand across beverage and food cans can pressure organic growth and margins. Its balance sheet remains a concern because leverage and variable rate debt leave earnings vulnerable to higher interest rates, while debt pay-down progress and signode-related synergy execution are not assured enough to offset that risk. Additional downside comes from higher raw material prices such as aluminum and natural gas, softer CSD consumption if volumes deteriorate, freshness-trend pressure on food cans, and the ever-present risk of losing a large customer.
