The case for and against

Updated Oct 14, 2026

Bull case

Ciena is well positioned for durable upside because hyperscalers and cloud providers now drive roughly 50% of revenue, while WaveLogic 6 adoption is already exceeding WaveLogic 5e and gives the company a leading product cycle in 1.6T AI connectivity. Its fundamentals are strengthened by a supply-constrained outlook rather than demand weakness, with about $11 billion of FY26 orders, backlog expected to exit near $10 billion, and FY27 revenue described as effectively covered by backlog, supporting visibility into growth. Management’s FY29 framework for about 30% revenue CAGR to roughly $14 billion, ~50% gross margins, and 32% to 35% operating margins also signals meaningful operating leverage as the TAM nearly doubles from $27 billion in 2026 to $52 billion in 2029.

Bear case

  • Ciena is facing a fundamentally weaker setup because customer concentration is high and rising, with two customers accounting for 34% of 2Q26 revenue, making any digestion pause from a hyperscaler immediately visible in results.
  • Its preliminary F2027 guidance suggests only mild revenue uplift of about 6% and a small gross margin improvement, while supply constraints continue to cap upside and supply commitments are likely to pressure cash from operations through F2027.
  • More broadly, demand remains vulnerable to disruptive networking technologies, macro-driven cuts in enterprise IT and carrier capex, and slower-than-expected AI-related optical spending as early scale benefits fail to translate into stronger investment in traditional optical transport.
