The case for and against

Updated Oct 16, 2026

Bull case

Cypherpunk Technologies is attractive because it is evolving from a passive ZEC holder into an active institutional steward of the Zcash ecosystem, backed by advisory ties to Zcash founder Zooko Wilcox and strategic investment in Zcash Open Development Labs. Its capital structure is relatively clean, with just $6.7m of net debt and 285.6 million diluted shares at initiation, while the warrant structure embeds $40.5m of contingent proceeds that can further expand the ZEC treasury without a new market raise. The launch of Cypherpunk Mining is especially compelling: a $33.33mm all-stock deal brought online ~4.2 GSol/s, about 18% of network hashpower, and should generate ZEC-denominated cash flow toward the company’s 5% supply target.

Bear case

Cypherpunk Technologies is highly dependent on ZEC for value creation, with much of its future valuation tied to the price of ZEC and the success of its treasury accumulation strategy, while mining assumptions such as 16.7%–16.8% of block rewards from 4Q26E and roughly 88,000 ZEC mined in 2027E expose it to operational and network risk. The outlook is further weakened by competition from other layer-1 blockchains and privacy technologies, possible Zcash ETF competition, and concerns that weaker developer activity, mining growth, or decentralization could pressure ZEC and impair treasury holdings. Its legacy biopharma business adds little support because management substantially reduced R&D spending and began winding down development activities during 2025, leaving a diminished oncology pipeline and limited offset to the crypto-linked risks.
