The case for and against

Updated Oct 16, 2026

Bull case

Editas Medicine is viewed positively because EDIT-401 appears to offer a differentiated, one-time CRISPR approach that could drive very deep lipid reductions, with preclinical data showing >90% LDL-C and >70% ApoB lowering and additional evidence of Lp(a) reduction in NHPs. The investment case is strengthened by a favorable regulatory and clinical backdrop, including the 13 March 2026 ACC/AHA guideline’s renewed emphasis on explicit LDL-C goals, universal Lp(a) screening, and early potent intervention, which could expand demand for transformative ASCVD therapies. Financially, the company reported $123.6 million in cash and equivalents as of 31 March 2026, implying runway into 3Q27, while modeled risk-adjusted 2035E sales of $515.5 million support meaningful long-term upside if clinical proof of concept is confirmed.

Bear case

Editas Medicine is viewed negatively because its core programs still face substantial clinical uncertainty, including first-in-human risks for EDIT-401, limited human data for dual guideRNA editing, and the possibility that efficacy seen in animals will not translate to patients. Although EDIT-401 showed about 49% LDL-C and 55% TG reduction at the highest dose and favorable liver tolerance in NHPs, the company still has to prove durable safety, manage off-target and extrahepatic editing risk, and demonstrate real-world demand in HeFH/ASCVD. The investment case is further weakened by regulatory and commercialization uncertainty, potential IP issues, and the likely need for additional capital that could dilute shareholders before profitability.
