The case for and against

Updated Oct 21, 2026

Bull case

Enterprise Finl Servs is favored because opportunistic acquisitions have expanded its footprint beyond strong Midwestern roots into attractive markets, broadened niche lending verticals, and strengthened its funding base for sustainable growth and above-peer profitability. Loan momentum is solid, with EOP loans up $199.6 million, or about 7% LQA, led by specialty lending and commercial real estate, while gross originations rose 48% q/q and 32% y/y, supporting a deep and diversified pipeline. The outlook is further reinforced by stable mid-to-high 4.27%-4.28% NIM guidance, disciplined deposit pricing, manageable expenses, active buybacks, and resilient capital with pro forma TRBC near 14.5% and TCE expected to build over time.

Bear case

Enterprise Finl Servs is viewed negatively because credit quality deteriorated sharply, with provision expense of $14.2mm versus a $6.4mm estimate and net charge-offs of $13.6mm, or 46bps of average loans, far above 1Q’s 15bps. NPLs rose 17% q/q to $76.1mm as a California hotel and a C&I relationship moved toward nonaccrual, pushing NPAs to 1.34% of loans/OREO, while the reserve ratio slipped to 1.17% of loans, suggesting less cushion if stress persists. Although stronger NII helped offset some weakness, weaker fee income and the risk of elevated interest rates, slower loan demand, and margin pressure point to a near-term earnings profile that remains vulnerable.
