The case for and against

Updated Oct 14, 2026

Bull case

Enphase Energy is supported by a favorable mix of product innovation, recurring demand, and expanding addressable markets, with the IQ9 launch already driving U.S. commercial microinverter sales and the 5th generation battery positioned to improve energy density by 50% while cutting cost by about 40%. Its Propel prepaid lease program is scaling to 200 net originations per week with 84% battery attach rates, translating to about 100MW of solar and 140MWh of batteries annually, while the $873.7mn TPO backlog and $52mn safe harbor agreement add visibility through 2030. Internationally, demand is firming in Europe as battery activations rose 75% in the Netherlands in April, and the company’s strong adjusted gross margin of 43.9% and EPS beat show it can defend profitability while tariffs and U.S. demand softness are absorbed.

Bear case

Enphase Energy is facing a weak U.S. residential solar backdrop, with permits down 31% YoY in 2Q26, down 26% in 1H26 versus 1H25, and Wood Mackenzie cutting 2026 U.S. residential demand to 3.75 GW, down 21% YoY. Its core growth engine is also under pressure from a difficult tax equity market, the 25D expiration, and intensifying competition that has already forced battery list prices down 10% in Europe and microinverter prices down 20% in December, with additional U.S. cuts of 12%-14% in March. At the same time, Enphase’s U.S. market share fell to 29.2% from 33.1%, and 3Q26 revenue of $281.2 million is expected to trail consensus of $308.0 million, while gross margin risk rises if lower-priced rivals keep eroding pricing power.
