The case for and against

Updated Oct 21, 2026

Bull case

Fate Therapeutics is viewed positively because its off-the-shelf iPSC platform is showing translational breadth across both autoimmune disease and oncology, with FT819 producing durable B-cell depletion, 74–96% reductions in expanded clones, and no G3+ CRS in heavily pretreated SLE patients. The registrational RECLAIM-LN study in 53 lupus nephritis patients, using outpatient FT819 with bendamustine preconditioning, adds a credible late-stage catalyst, while FT839’s IND clearance and planned Phase I/II basket study broaden the pipeline into RA, SLE, SSC, AAV, and IIM. Financially, the outlook is supported by an increased projected enterprise value of $1.09 billion versus $766 million, reflecting higher pipeline value and multiple near-term data readouts expected in 1H:27, 2H:27, and 2H:28.

Bear case

Fate Therapeutics is viewed negatively because its therapies may fail in the clinic, and its iPSC-derived NK and T-cell candidates face meaningful clinical, regulatory, and commercial execution risk. The autoimmune disease market is highly competitive, which could make it difficult for the company to differentiate its programs or gain meaningful adoption against better-positioned competitors. In addition, the company will likely require additional cash and may face future litigation, adding financing and legal uncertainty to an already unfavorable political and commercial environment.
