The case for and against

Updated Oct 16, 2026

Bull case

Deep Fission is attractive because it combines proven pressurized-water reactor technology with a differentiated underground deployment model that can strip out costly pressure vessels, containment domes, and cooling systems while using geology and hydrostatic pressure for safety and confinement. The company’s progress under the DOE Reactor Pilot Program, including selection as one of 10 participants, DOE approval of its NSDA in August 2026, and the September 10, 2026 canister test, reduces execution risk and supports an accelerated path toward NRC licensing and commercial operation. Its financial case is strengthened by a current net cash position of $93.0 million, a $20 million Blue Owl investment, a $9.2 million LEU supply contract, and a disclosed pipeline of about 18.5 GW, suggesting meaningful demand for a lower-cost, faster-to-deploy nuclear solution.

Bear case

Deep Fission is a highly speculative nuclear developer whose thesis depends on unproven commercialization of the Gravity Reactor, despite no NRC approval yet and meaningful uncertainty around a novel mile-deep borehole design that adds drilling, inspection, maintenance, and geological risks. Financially, the company remains deeply loss-making, with 2Q26 EPS of ($0.56), operating expenses of $31.6 million, and Adj.-EBITDA of ($24.2) million, while management itself expects free cash flow to remain negative through at least 2034E as heavy capex funds deployments. Even with LOIs for over 18.5GW and a modeled $0.06/kWh LCOE, the investment case is undermined by financing needs, potential regulatory delays, supply-chain constraints, and the fact that commercialization is still dependent on binding power agreements and first revenue only in late '27.
