The case for and against

Updated Oct 14, 2026

Bull case

Flagstar Bank is supported by a clear “bad to better” turnaround as criticized and classified loans fell for a fifth consecutive quarter to about $11.7 billion, nonperforming loans declined to $2.68 billion, and the allowance ratio improved to 1.67% from 1.79%. Its earnings power is also strengthening, with core net interest margin rising to 2.15%, core deposits increasing by over $1 billion, and C&I loan production accelerating alongside a strong $2.1 billion pipeline. The investment case is further reinforced by investment-grade deposit ratings from Fitch and Moody’s, a 13.24% CET1 ratio, and excess capital that supports buybacks and long-term growth as the bank shifts toward a more durable lending mix.

Bear case

Flagstar Bank is viewed negatively because management has already lowered 2026 and 2027 earnings and margin guidance, yet the analyst still expects results to fall short, with 2026 EPS cut to $0.42 and net interest income projected at $1.940B versus guided $1.950B-$2.050B. The outlook reflects weaker loan growth, a lower 2026 NIM estimate of 2.27%, and softer fee income, while 1Q26 showed pressure from a $24M drop in net interest income, a $19M decline in PPNR, and only modestly improved core EPS of $0.04. Credit and execution risks remain elevated as CRE and multifamily exposures continue to run off, deposits fell $1.84B in 1Q, and integration risk from prior acquisitions could keep profitability and tangible book value under pressure.
