The case for and against

Updated Oct 14, 2026

Bull case

Flowers Foods is well positioned because Dave’s Killer Bread remains its strongest asset, continuing to grow sales and gain share while benefiting from consumer preference shifts toward better-for-you brands with cleaner ingredient profiles. The company’s outlook is also supported by a generous dividend of nearly 14%, and although the payout ratio is around 125% on an EPS basis, significant depreciation makes the free-cash-flow payout ratio closer to 80%, which is still elevated but more manageable. With the stock trading at a depressed multiple, even a modest improvement in the economic backdrop could provide meaningful momentum for shares.

Bear case

Flowers Foods is under pressure because 2Q26 adjusted EPS of $0.21 and adjusted EBITDA of $111.3 million both missed expectations, while management cut FY26 net sales, EBITDA, and EPS guidance after a quarter of broad-based weakness. The core baked goods business is being squeezed by price-sensitive consumers, trade-down behavior, and heavier promotional intensity, with DKB specifically hurt by reduced marketing and stronger competition, limiting the company’s ability to offset declines in fresh bread demand. Rising wheat, soybean oil, transportation, and energy costs, combined with customer concentration and no long-term supply contracts, threaten margin durability, free cash flow, and ultimately the dividend.
