The case for and against

Updated Oct 21, 2026

Bull case

Fortive is attractive because its first-quarter adjusted EPS rose 25.4% year over year to $0.70, while sales increased 7.7% to $1.069B and core growth of 5.3% came from both price and volume across regions and segments. Operating performance also strengthened, with adjusted EBITDA up 13.2% to $314M and margin expanding 140 bps to 29.3%, supported by operating leverage, structural cost savings, and favorable FX despite tariff pressure. Its outlook is reinforced by broad-based North America strength, resilient recurring revenue in Fluke and healthcare consumables/software, healthy backlog and book-to-bill above 1.0, and reaffirmed 2026 EPS guidance of $2.90-$3.00 alongside continued buybacks and bolt-on M&A.

Bear case

Fortive is viewed negatively because tariffs are still pressuring gross margins and are expected to remain a headwind partway through 3Q before countermeasures lap in 4Q, while broader macro risks, supply-chain issues, and currency or material-cost inflation could keep results below forecast. The company’s upside depends heavily on sustained organic growth, rising recurring/software revenue, and disciplined bolt-on M&A, yet any disappointment there could trigger multiple compression as investors monitor progress against relatively near-term 2026-2027 targets. Even after a positive 2.2% price realization and a 4c/5% 1Q26 operating beat, Fortive’s shares still trade at 18.4x 2027E P/E, a 19% discount to peers, implying the market is already skeptical about durability and execution.
