The case for and against

Updated Oct 22, 2026

Bull case

Gildan Activewear is viewed positively because its core thesis rests on durable free-cash-flow conversion, with historical operating cash flow above $500M for three consecutive years and FCF averaging about 50% of EBITDA since 2023. Management’s confidence in a return to organic growth in Q3/26, helped by completed destocking, new retail programs, and easier comparisons, supports the view that the business can rebound from the -8.7% decline in H1/26. The HanesBrands acquisition adds meaningful synergy potential, while trading at a near-trough 2027 P/E of 8.2x and with leverage near 3.3x PF LTM EBITDA, the setup offers upside if integration, de-levering, and eventual buybacks execute well.

Bear case

Gildan Activewear is facing a negative setup because sustained pressure on consumer discretionary spending and ongoing cost inflation are forcing lower revenue growth and margin assumptions through 2027, even as management must still prove a return to positive organic growth in H2/26. The business also carries meaningful execution and concentration risk after the Hanesbrands acquisition, while limited contract protection, rising DSOs, and weakening inventory turnover reduce visibility if customer demand softens. Although shares have already fallen -34% year-to-date to 7.8x FTM P/E, the valuation reset reflects real concern that earnings could still fall further under higher input costs, trade risk, and a prolonged macro slowdown.
