The case for and against

Updated Oct 17, 2026

Bull case

Golar LNG is supported by powerful secular demand for flexible LNG infrastructure, as energy security concerns, geopolitical risk, and attractive project economics are driving producers toward FLNG solutions, especially in West Africa and other gas-rich regions. Its investment case is strengthened by a sizable ~$16.5B fixed EBITDA backlog across three contracted FLNG units, robust Q2 adjusted EBITDA of ~$117M, and a strong liquidity position with ~$908M of cash against ~$2.7B of debt. The outlook is further improved by the positive FID on its fourth FLNG, which is the only uncontracted FLNG under development and could expand fleetwide liquefaction capacity by about 40%, while long-term deployment opportunities in Cameroon, Argentina, and elsewhere should continue to grow cash flows.

Bear case

Golar LNG is exposed to a softer near-term LNG demand backdrop, as 2Q26 Asian LNG imports fell to ~38Mt, the lowest level in five years and ~7% below the five-year average, while China’s volumes were ~18% below its own five-year average. Although June saw a rebound, the shift toward more expensive spot cargoes and reliance on sanctioned Russian supply suggests a volatile market rather than durable end-demand strength, which is unfavorable for a company heavily reliant on FLNG revenue and Cameroon exposure. In Europe, Q2 net imports fell ~4% Y-Y and EU storage remains ~15% below last year, underscoring uneven fundamentals that could pressure utilization, pricing power, and cash flow visibility.
