The case for and against

Updated Oct 14, 2026

Bull case

Hut 8 is favored because it is proving it can convert scarce power access into long-duration, investment-grade AI infrastructure contracts, highlighted by River Bend and Beacon Point, where management has rapidly signed 2 deals totaling about 1 GW in roughly eight months. The company’s power-first strategy, backed by strong partnerships with Entergy, Jacobs Engineering, Fluidstack, Anthropic, Google, and others, reduces execution risk, supports faster commercialization, and creates a moat in a market constrained by interconnection and utility availability. Financially, the visible pipeline is compelling: River Bend’s 15-year lease is expected to generate about $7.0B, Beacon Point adds $9.8B of base-term value, and total leased IT capacity has risen to 949 MW with nearly $27B of aggregate lease payments through approximately 2043.

Bear case

  • Hut 8 is exposed to a highly volatile Bitcoin price that can quickly compress revenue and profitability in its Compute-heavy model, even if mined coin output is unchanged, while rising energy prices and grid or policy disruptions can further squeeze margins because electricity is its largest cost.
  • The company also faces execution and capital-allocation risk as new mining rigs are in high demand and lead times are lengthening, while project-level financing adds burden; this is reflected in the sharp reduction of '26E / '27E estimates from ($3.35) / ($0.17) to ($4.58) / ($2.27) due to expensed interest and a lower BTC price.
  • In addition, regulatory changes, mining downtime, AI colocation issues, and weaker data-center demand create multiple operational headwinds across its U.S. and Canada footprint, making its power, infrastructure, and compute expansion less predictable and reinforcing a negative fundamental outlook.
