The case for and against

Updated Oct 14, 2026

Bull case

Independent Bank is supported by durable commercial loan momentum, with double-digit growth continuing since 3Q24 and a 16% LQA increase in the commercial portfolio, which strengthens interest income and offsets a 2% LQA deposit decline. Its core earnings power also looks solid, as PPNR benefited from NIM expansion of 6 bps q/q to 3.71%, fee income strength, and management-guided 2-4 bps quarterly NIM expansion aided by lower funding costs and redeployment opportunities. Credit quality appears manageable despite an NPA uptick to 76 bps, because the issue is concentrated in one credit, while capital remains healthy with CET1 at 11.70% and TBV up 12% Y/Y to $23.38.

Bear case

Independent Bank is facing a weaker fundamental backdrop because credit quality deteriorated, with provision expense of $2.7mm above the $1.8mm estimate and NPAs rising to 76bps of loans/OREO from 66bps q/q, while management still tied roughly two-thirds of NPLs to a single commercial development project with no firm resolution timeline. Core fee income slipped to $12.1M q/q, and the 2026 outlook remains muted with fee income guided at $11.3M-$12.3M per quarter, even as mortgage origination volumes are expected to fall 6%-7% and net GOS 14%-16% versus FY2025. The company also faces near-term pressure from an interest-rate environment that could curb loan demand and compress margins, leaving earnings vulnerable despite a relatively modest LLR increase to 1.49% and NCOs at 3bps.
