The case for and against

Updated Oct 21, 2026

Bull case

Imax is viewed positively because its record $712 million global box office in 3Q, led by The Odyssey’s nearly $400 million contribution, shows powerful demand for premium IMAX presentations and strong operating leverage. The company’s expected Q3 revenue of $161 million, EBITDA of $84 million to $91 million, and EPS of $0.98, alongside a 9.4% share of domestic box office versus a 5% average in 2025 and 4% in 2023–2024, indicate that its branded platform is gaining share and converting attendance into earnings efficiently. Its expanding 2026–2027 slate, deep studio relationships, and ability to pivot programming across local language, alternative content, and major tentpoles support further network growth, margin expansion, and durable cash generation.

Bear case

Imax is exposed to multiple fundamental weaknesses that pressure its long-term earnings quality, including weak macro conditions, uncertain box-office demand, and secular shifts in how movies are watched. Its dependence on blockbuster tent-pole films, commercial exhibitors, and the success of IMAX DMR content makes revenue vulnerable if audience demand softens or exhibitors reduce purchases, leases, or revenue-sharing activity. Added risks from China regulation, competitive encroachment, technology adoption uncertainty, IP protection issues, and variable quarterly operating results further support a negative outlook.
