The case for and against

Updated Oct 17, 2026

Bull case

Intuit is well positioned by its dominant share in US small-business accounting and self-serve tax, a subscription-heavy model with 80%+ of revenue recurring and platform revenue rising to 60% of total revenue in FY26 from 53% in FY20. Its outlook is supported by a consumer tax reset that targets price-sensitive filers through Credit Karma while reserving TurboTax for complex returns, with ~80% of CK tax customers incremental and dual CK/TT users generating 50% higher ARPC. Management also sees meaningful upside from AI and mid-market expansion, backed by 70K+ data points per consumer across 82M users, 700K upgrade-eligible customers, and the potential for sustainable 40%+ non-GAAP operating margins and 30%+ GAAP operating margins over the next several years.

Bear case

Intuit is facing a negative fundamental setup because its core businesses are highly exposed to small business and consumer activity, making results vulnerable to macro slowdowns, weakening SMB formation, and higher bankruptcy rates. Execution risk around Credit Karma and Mailchimp, combined with the possibility that GenAI initiatives do not deliver as expected, adds uncertainty, while regulatory simplification could pressure its tax franchises such as TurboTax. Competition from larger software vendors and smaller upstarts also threatens pricing, margins, and market share, especially after recent TurboTax underperformance and ongoing debate around AI disintermediation.
