The case for and against

Updated Oct 22, 2026

Bull case

Inventiva is supported by a differentiated pan-PPAR mechanism in lanifibranor that targets metabolic drivers, inflammation, and fibrotic remodeling, while its Phase 2b NATIVE data already showed 24% placebo-adjusted response on the composite endpoint and 18% fibrosis improvement at 6 months. Management and analysts view those results as a credible bar for Phase 3 NATiV3, especially since the trial is longer at 72 weeks, enriched with about 55% T2D patients and more F3 disease, and has shown dropout rates below 30%, which supports statistical durability. The company also has a sizable commercial opportunity in MASH, with projected worldwide peak adjusted revenue of €2.4B/$2.7B and longer-term U.S. risk-adjusted sales forecast around $3.2B by 2035, while partnerships and IP through 2041 add strategic optionality.

Bear case

Inventiva is burdened by a clinical and commercial risk profile that remains fragile despite encouraging phase 2b efficacy, because its lead asset still faces phase 3 uncertainty, a prior ~4% discontinuation rate from adverse events, and safety liabilities such as dose-dependent edema and weight gain that could undermine long-term adherence. The bearish case is reinforced by evidence that on-target PPARγ effects may raise fracture and hepatic monitoring concerns, while strong placebo variability and a reported SUSAR case highlight how easily readouts can disappoint or require tighter trial controls. Fundamentally, the company also faces a highly competitive MASH landscape, meaningful pricing pressure, and ongoing financing needs, all of which make dilution and commercialization risk material.
