The case for and against

Updated Oct 18, 2026

Bull case

Kinetik Holdings is favorably positioned by its Permian Basin focus, high-quality gathering and transportation assets, and strong pipeline connectivity, which together support continued share gains and meaningful free cash flow growth. The company’s >2.4Bcf/d of processing capacity, >80% fixed-fee gross margin, and 3.8x leverage within its 3.5x–4.0x target range provide visible cash flow and financial flexibility while it funds growth. Upside is reinforced by rising producer activity, recovering Waha pricing, the Kings Landing II expansion to 380MMcf/d, and expected 2026 Adj. EBITDA of $1,040-1,100MM.

Bear case

Kinetik Holdings is vulnerable to a prolonged weak commodity-price environment because oil and Waha price weakness can delay producer activity, reduce drilling, and push lower volumes through its Permian Basin system, directly pressuring cash flows despite limited direct commodity exposure. Its concentration in the Permian Basin creates outsized risk from adverse weather, water shortages, takeaway constraints, and pipeline maintenance, while more integrated competitors with fractionation or export capabilities may win business away from its gathering, processing, treating, and transportation platform. The downside case explicitly assumes declining system volumes and applies 8x for Midstream Logistics and 10x for Pipeline Transportation, underscoring that Kinetik’s earnings remain highly dependent on basin production trends and acreage-dedicated throughput.
