The case for and against

Updated Oct 21, 2026

Bull case

Kroger is supported by its dominant scale as the largest pure-play U.S. supermarket operator, with roughly 2,700 stores and a defensible 38% share in Indianapolis versus Walmart’s 21%. Its positive outlook is reinforced by evidence that targeted price investments are lifting incremental volumes and comps above average, while the latest results showed total sales ahead of forecast by $209 million and FIFO EBIT beating expectations by $29 million despite weaker food volumes. Fundamentally, the company also appears well positioned to expand value through private-label and perishables, fuel strength, pharmacy scale, and disciplined self-help from procurement, e-commerce, and cost reductions, all while trading below its historical EV/EBITDA range.

Bear case

Kroger is facing a weaker fundamental setup as food volumes decelerate, with one view cutting 2026 EBIT by $95 million and 2027 by $250 million as lower comps and softer flow-through pressure brick-and-mortar earnings. While management held 2026 EBIT guidance at $5.0-5.2 billion and delivered an in-line 1Q with total sales boosted by fuel, the underlying mix remains challenged by 1.2% food volume decline, margin erosion, and SG&A growth outpacing sales. Competitive pressure from mass, club, dollar, ecommerce, and non-traditional food retailers, plus the risk that price increases cannot be passed through in a weak personal-income backdrop, supports a cautious outlook.
