The case for and against

Updated Oct 16, 2026

Bull case

Leidos Holdings is favored for its stronger-than-expected 1Q26 execution, with adjusted EPS of $3.13 versus $2.90 consensus and revenue of $4.4B rising 4% year over year, while the ~$2.4B Entrust acquisition lifted guidance and adds inorganic growth. Health remains a core support, as flat revenues still produced a 24.2% adjusted operating margin and elevated VA exam volumes should keep demand resilient, while defense exposure to air defense, hypersonics, and unmanned ships offers additional growth avenues. Although 2026 EBITDA margins are guided to mid-13% and the 0.8x book-to-bill shows some near-term backlog pressure, the 4% total backlog increase, 31% funded backlog gain, and roughly $9B of defense tech awards over the last 15 months support a constructive long-term view.

Bear case

Leidos Holdings is pressured by heavy dependence on U.S. government spending, where annual defense and agency funding can shift with congressional priorities, budget legislation, and Department of Veterans Affairs demand. It also faces meaningful operating and valuation risks from inflation, foreign exchange, interest rates, cyber threats, security disruptions, pension support dependence, and tax-rate exposure, while its defense profile can weigh on sustainability-minded investors. Although Entrust added $500 million to sales and $0.05 to adjusted EPS and guidance rose, management still expects 2Q26 to be the low point of the year, with risks from federal budget disruptions, slower contract ramp-up, staffing constraints, and pricing pressure.
