The case for and against

Updated Oct 21, 2026

Bull case

  • Legence is benefiting from a powerful AI infrastructure cycle, with Data Centers & Technology now the primary growth engine at 63% of revenue and up about 267% Y/Y, while Q2 2026 revenue rose 110.7% to $1.26 billion and adjusted EBITDA increased 114.1% to $154.6 million.
  • Its record $5.67 billion backlog and 1.2x book-to-bill ratio provide strong forward visibility, and the integrated lifecycle platform spanning engineering, fabrication, installation, and recurring maintenance supports cross-selling, pricing power, and durable demand across mission-critical facilities.
  • Financially, improving capital efficiency is reinforcing the bullish case, as first-half operating cash flow reached about $194.5 million, net leverage fell to 1.6x, ROC rose from 16.38% to 30.42%, and Economic Profit climbed to $349.9 million, signaling strong earnings quality and shareholder value creation.

Bear case

Legence is viewed negatively because its growth is highly exposed to cyclical end markets and to the pace of data center build-outs and manufacturing reshoring, both of which could slow in a weaker macro environment. The company’s reliance on fixed-price contracts, long project cycles, and subcontractors leaves it vulnerable to cost overruns, delayed payments, and margin compression from rising raw materials, labor, and component costs. Recent segment data also show pressure in profitability, with I&M gross margins roughly flat Q-Q and down ~50 bps Y-Y, while E&C gross margins fell ~330 bps Q-Q and ~560 bps Y-Y, suggesting execution risk is already evident.
