The case for and against

Updated Oct 17, 2026

Bull case

Ligand Pharmaceuticals is attractive fundamentally because its high-margin royalty-and-Captisol model converts a broad portfolio of commercial and late-stage assets into recurring cash flow while limiting operating risk. Q2/26 total revenue of $63.7MM rose 34% y/y, adjusted core EPS of $2.37 beat expectations, and management raised the low end of 2026 EPS guidance to $9.00–$9.50 while reaffirming $270–$310MM in total revenue. Its outlook is further supported by roughly $1 billion in deployable capital, 200+ assets after the XOMA acquisition, and multiple growth catalysts including 7 pivotal readouts expected by the end of 2027 and strong royalty momentum from products like FILSPARI and Ohtuvayre.

Bear case

Ligand Pharmaceuticals is viewed negatively because its valuation depends heavily on partnered assets and early-stage programs that still face substantial clinical and commercial uncertainty, including inconclusive trials, poor reimbursement, and weak traction from marketed drugs. Its revenue base remains exposed to concentrated royalty contributors and Captisol sales, both of which could be pressured by competition, manufacturing or IP issues, and slower-than-expected product performance, while acquisitions and deal-making add execution risk. The cited AVC-201 data are still from a small, short-follow-up Phase 1a study of 17 patients, so durability and commercial relevance remain unproven despite some early responses in a historically difficult AML setting.
