The case for and against

Updated Oct 15, 2026

Bull case

Cheniere Energy is positioned favorably because its predominantly long-term take-or-pay contracts with high-quality counterparties create durable cash flow visibility, while its limited spot exposure and optimization upside still allow it to benefit from elevated LNG margins. The company’s 2Q26 beat and second consecutive guidance increase, including a $650MM uplift to 2026 Adjusted EBITDA guidance to $7,900-$8,400MM and volume guidance of 53-54 MT, underscore improving operational reliability, de-bottlenecking, and stronger commercialization. With CCL Stage 3 Train 6 substantially complete, SPL Train 7 advancing toward an early 2027 FID, and significant shareholder returns via dividends and buybacks, Cheniere has a credible growth pipeline and resilient financial profile.

Bear case

Cheniere Energy is exposed to a weakening global LNG market, where lower spot prices, higher geopolitical premiums, and volatile flows can compress margins and reduce the value of uncontracted cargoes. Its downside case assumes customers do not lift gas, CMI volumes are unsold, SPA EBITDA falls 10%, and recontracting occurs at about 10% lower rates, implying roughly 8x EV to 2027E EBITDA and no additional growth. Even with resilient demand in SE Asia and tightening winter conditions, prolonged US-China trade conflict, renewal risk, and execution or debt-migration setbacks could limit cash returns and pressure the stock.
