The case for and against

Updated Sep 5, 2026

Bull case

LENSAR is making significant strides in the ophthalmic medical device market with their femtosecond laser system for cataract surgery. With strong financials and a growing install base, they are well-positioned for continued success. The failed acquisition by Alcon may provide an opportunity for other companies to respond and potentially lead to increased competition in the market. However, we believe that LENSAR's innovative technology and focus on recurring revenue will drive future growth and justify a higher valuation compared to its peers.

Bear case

LENSAR is facing significant challenges in the market and its future revenue streams due to lower growth projections and higher operating spend. With flat revenue in FY26 and further decline in FY27 and FY28, their ALLY pricing changes and thinner margins will make it difficult for them to remain competitive in the ophthalmic industry. Despite a strong initial performance, the terminated acquisition by ALC and the need for a priority credit line agreement to stay afloat raises concerns about their ability to continue operations in the long term.
