The case for and against

Updated Oct 14, 2026

Bull case

Lyft is benefiting from a clearer mix shift toward higher-value rides, partnerships, and international expansion, which is lifting gross bookings, unit economics, and margins even as total ride growth moderates. In 2Q, gross bookings rose 23% Y/Y, adjusted EBITDA increased 37% Y/Y to $177mm, active riders reached a record 30.5mm, and free cash flow was $319.6mn, signaling stronger operating leverage and earnings durability. Its expanding ecosystem, including Freenow, Gett, TBR, and about 30% of North America rideshare rides sourced through partnerships, plus AV optionality with Waymo and Flexdrive, supports a constructive long-term outlook.

Bear case

Lyft is challenged by a structurally weaker competitive position versus Uber, capturing only about 30% of U.S. rideshare spend while the larger peer benefits from superior rider and driver density, lower acquisition costs, and stronger brand leverage. The outlook is further pressured by an ongoing slowdown in gross bookings, core business Gross Bookings tracking below the company’s +15% 2024 to 2027 target, and 2027 estimates for bookings and adjusted EBITDA coming in about 1% below consensus. Although acquisitions such as Gett, Freenow, and TBR Global Chauffeuring and a $100mm advertising run rate support diversification, they do not close the scale gap, while AV competition, elevated S&M, insurance inflation, and U.S. regulatory uncertainty remain meaningful risks.
