The case for and against

Updated Oct 14, 2026

Bull case

Meta Platforms is supported by an unusually large, growing user base of 3.60 billion daily active people and a dominant advertising engine that already benefits from strong ROI, better ad ranking, and improving monetization across Reels, WhatsApp business messaging, and other formats. Its bullish case is strengthened by Muse AI, which has reached the #1 position on the iOS app store and could open recurring revenue from subscriptions, commerce take rates, and developer tools, while early evidence such as 15 million subscriptions and trials and more than one million businesses using Meta Business Agent signals real engagement. Management’s push into AI glasses, including a broader style lineup and integration with Muse, adds a potentially meaningful hardware and ecosystem opportunity, while the core ad business continues to fund heavy AI spending and support higher return on capital and Economic Profit.

Bear case

Meta Platforms is viewed negatively because its core advertising business faces slowing engagement risk, especially if the company cannot sustain user activity among ~3.6 billion Daily Active People or keep younger users from drifting to emerging platforms like TikTok. Heavy investment requirements in Reality Labs and AI could further pressure returns, with a $4.62 billion Q2 operating loss and planned 2026 capital expenditures of $130 billion to $145 billion raising concern that spending may outpace monetization. Even with projected 14% annual revenue growth from '26E-'31E and a decline in operating margins from 35% in FY26E to 33% in FY31E, intense competition, privacy and litigation risks, and weaker ad demand could compress earnings and economic profit.
