The case for and against

Updated Oct 18, 2026

Bull case

Nu Holdings is attractive because it has turned a digital-first model into a scaled, low-cost consumer banking platform with over 100 million customers, a loan/deposit ratio of 87% versus Monzo’s 9%, and strong monetization through credit cards, loans, and fee income. Its latest 2Q results underscored the quality of that growth, with revenue of $5.88 billion, net interest income of $3.69 billion, fee income of $816.4 million, risk-adjusted NIM of 12.53%, and IFRS EPS of $0.22, all supported by better-than-expected credit performance. The bull case is further reinforced by early-stage expansion into the US and continued growth in Brazil, Mexico, and Colombia, where management can extend its “low and grow” strategy while preserving impressive profitability through good credit risk management and a lean cost structure.

Bear case

Nu Holdings is vulnerable to a growth slowdown if broader economic weakness in Latin America raises credit losses and dampens loan demand, which would directly pressure the profitability of a business that derives a significant amount of revenue and EPS from lending. Its dependence on Brazil for more than 90% of revenue also leaves it exposed to local economic, currency, and political volatility, while regulatory capital requirements in each market could force additional capital deployment or external fundraising that hurts equity returns. Although it serves over 100 million customers, execution risk remains elevated because US expansion may be slower than expected and competition from local fintechs and global entrants could make it harder to replicate Brazil’s success across Mexico and Colombia.
